“The Wooly Markmont is the first collaboration between CLYW and One Drop. This return top was inspired by the art work of Frank Bradley, where he submitted an illustration of One Drop team member Mark Montgomery as a Wooly Marmot.
After seeing this image it just made sense to us to combine the Markmont Next axle system with the Wooly Marmot … and Nickel plate it! The return top also has an improved Wooly Marmot design with slightly angled gap walls for less string friction and a bit more rim weight.
This collaboration is a true union of both company’s strengths and will hopefully bring together future projects between One Drop and CLYW.”
“The 54 is the first full size release from One Drop. It is named after the diameter which is 54mm. It is designed to be floaty and is the first yo-yo to use the Side Effects axle system. You will get aluminum spikes as pictured as well as brass domes. We’ll have many more available in the future that you can use with this yo-yo.”
The 54’s innovation of Side Effects has had a huge impact on yo-yo design, with many other companies licensing out usage of the system. There is a huge assortment of Side Effects available today in many different styles, materials, and colors.
“The MarkMont Next stays true to the original. The design imperative was to make the yo-yo that Mark wants. It has the same basic profile as the original with some small but important tweaks. The first difference is that it is made on a lathe whereas the original was made on a mill – the benefit here is improved concentricity. We added a little thickness in the middle so we could put in a Flow Groove response system (the original had pad response). We also added some rim weight to increase the spin time and stability. You’ll notice the hub/cup area looks a lot different including a new axle nut that has a unique look not seen before. The finish is soda blasted and nickel plated.“
