Rev History

From One Drop:

“We are blessed to have a unique experience behind the scenes in designing and building a new yo-yo model.  This is a process of REVisions. We usually build the first version of a new model and then begin testing it and each of us ends up with an opinion.  We consider all the ideas, and then typically build one or more revisions and repeat the process until we find “the one”.

It’s really interesting to be able to feel how even relatively small changes can affect how a yo-yo feels and plays.   The word “opinion” above was chosen intentionally because so much of the evaluation is subjective. Obviously if a design has a huge obvious flaw (pulse vibe, doesn’t spin very long, etc) then it objectively needs to be changed and in a specific way.  But typically we don’t have those issues because we have sufficient experience to avoid the big problems.

The point is that it usually comes down to personal taste.  We end up choosing one of the revs even though all of them are good yo-yos and could be the one released.  If you visit our factory, The Machinist has a special drawer with some of these un-released versions of yo-yos that you could try.

For the Rev, we want to give you this experience.   Over time we will release different revisions of the Rev starting with “Rev 1”.  Each release will be limited to 300 units and will not be made again. We plan on having the CAD cross-sections on the box art.   For the first one, there will be one cross-section. For the second one, there will be two overlapping cross-sections so that you can compare the difference in the design and then compare the difference in play.

After the first Rev is released, we will then listen to you feedback informally (no votes, surveys or anything official – just message us your thoughts), come up with a new version and that will be Rev 2.  And so on, as long as you all are interested.

The design itself is based on a Top Deck so you’ll notice it has a similar profile shape, but don’t be fooled, the weight distribution and cup are changed radically and it plays like a totally different beast.  If you happen to have a Top Deck, you can get the comparison party started early when you have the first Rev. Like the Top Deck, it’s made of 7075 alloy.

For the first Rev, you’ll notice a single groove in the cup.  This is there to make it clear which version it is. We’ll do something similar on subsequent versions.”
