Iteration is where the most fun parts of running a yo-yo brand happen. The feeling of throwing a new prototype for the first time, assembling something unique for the first time ever off the 3D printer, or a doodle on your daily carry to make it truly your own. The creative side of yo-yo extends to more than just tricks.
We love making new yo-yos. Freshly Dirty has never been about money, instead your support over these last 9 years has only allowed us to keep iterating and taking more risks. Untitled is all about trying new things and doing what brings joy.
We made a 74 gram bimetal with big brass rings. It’s oversized, H shaped, and insanely stable. It will help you push into new territory in your 1A. It will make demanding 5A combos immune to tilt or going off plane. But most of all it is a monster of a 3A yo-yo.
The “74” engraving is a reminder of the iteration that goes into making anything that is great. We scribble weights on yo-yos when rapidly trying new designs or tweaks to the shape, and something as simple as a number can represent an enormous amount of thought, attention to detail, and love.
Thank you for 9 years of support and for loving this process as much as we do.”
“Year: 1991 City: Laguna Beach Location: Club Post Nuclear Music: New Beat and Industrial
Laguna Beach is important and special in the history of One Drop because that is where the owners (Shawn and David) met way back in 1991. We happened to both be hanging out at Club Post Nuclear every Friday night and ended up being roommates and friends. It’s fair to say that One Drop started in Laguna Beach. It feels right to honor how this all came to be by calling this new yo-yo the Laguna.
What also started in 1991 was a life long friendship. The idea to start a business together happened not too long after meeting and becoming roommates. It took a decade for it to actually happen and One Drop Design was formed in 2001. We started making yo-yos in 2007. “They” say to not go into business with your friends, and while that is probably generally true, One Drop is fueled by our friendship and it just works. Pretty cool!
The first thing that happened in the design process was that we were able to buy blue Delrin in a reasonable quantity. Normally we can easily get black and white but other colors are usually really expensive and only available in large quantities. We jumped on it.
We made only two Delrin models previously: Cabal and Cabal Gen 2 and it was definitely time for a new model. The goal was to achieve modern specs and proportions without using a weight ring. Because Delrin is less dense than aluminum, it weighs less, so you need more of it to achieve a desirable weight. The first Cabal wasn’t very wide so it had to be really thick to achieve the weight without a ring. By making the Laguna much wider and lighter (10mm wider and 5 grams lighter than the Cabal), we were able to achieve the correct weight without it being overly thick. This also allowed us to push a ton of weight out to the rim.
Our trusty physicist and good friend, Dirty Birdy, crunched the numbers and the Laguna is well into the “Dark Side” which means it has large amounts of rim weight and spins forever. The overall feeling of machined Delrin in your hand is always nostalgic to the old plastic yo-yos, but the performance meets modern expectations. It’s a joy to play.”
“When it comes to yoyos, Dressel Designs studies the past to shape the future. Apollo is our second yoyo machined from POM, and our first non-hybrid plastic design.
Our team grew up with plastic yoyos, when throwing rancid milks and hourglass combos reigned supreme. There’s something special about that early feeling of yoyos, when your favorite staple tricks were being innovated left and right.
We opted to build Apollo with POM (Delrin) plastic. It is tough to use POM with complex construction like fixed caps or bimetal rims, and even moreso when the materials are slippery like POM. But there is an undeniably buttery-smooth texture that comes with POM that is difficult to recreate with other plastic materials, and most closely matches the feeling of those old plastic toys. While we love Polycarbonate and value how much easier it can be to build a multi-piece yoyo, we chose to avoid cutting corners to stay true to our goals for Apollo.
But yoyos aren’t just toys anymore. They’re built to perform.
Apollo builds a balance between these distinct epochs of ideals and play, melding together into one beautifully precision machined model that doesn’t compromise on what you value.
Looking for a trendy shape and wide catch zone for your biggest tricks and highest clicks? Apollo makes them riskless.
Looking to explore the intricacies and sensation of plastic that make your favorite players’ nostalgic? Apollo guides you there on every throw.
How about something that stands out visually from the rest of your collection? You won’t believe the unique engraving technique we used on our caps until you feel it for yourself.
Apollo isn’t just a yoyo. It’s a bridge between worlds.
