History
The Russell Professional Spinner has a more scattered production history than other Russell models, appearing in different markets under slightly different names across two decades. Its first documented appearance was in South Africa in 1976–77 for the Sprite launch campaign; it was then produced for the Philippines in 1979 as part of that campaign’s Sprite rollout.
The most thoroughly documented production run is the Mexican variant, manufactured with “CAMPEON; COCA-COLA; YOYO-PROFESSIONAL; HECHO EN MEXICO” text alongside white side discs on a translucent lemon-yellow plastic body, the Coke logo rendered in mirrored blue. The Mexican Spinner is notable for its confirmed specifications, documented via 3D scan reference data: 55mm diameter, 68g without string.
Construction follows standard Russell practice: hollow wooden dowel axle with metal rivet, sonic-welded non-disassembling end caps, starburst friction lines for string return. The flat, bulge-faced body shape gives the Spinner a profile distinct from the slimline Championship and the rounder Super, though the three models share the same core construction DNA.
