History
The Russell Challenge was released in Japan in 1979 as part of Coca-Cola’s expanding Japanese campaign, alongside the Super and Special Spin. Its rounded shape with flat centers echoes the profile of classic Duncan Tournament models — a deliberate nod to American yoyo heritage for a Japanese market already familiar with the Tournament name.
The Challenge carries an unusual historical footnote: it was produced to celebrate Japan’s anticipated participation in the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, for which Coca-Cola was a major sponsor. Japan ultimately joined the United States-led boycott of those games, making the Challenge an inadvertent document of Cold War geopolitics in toy form.
Unlike the Russell Beginner, the Challenge’s string is not pre-attached to the axle — no pegged axle — which gave players the freedom to re-string and adjust tension. The fixed wooden axle with starburst response lines was otherwise standard Russell construction.
