About

The Championship 99 is Lumar’s most-produced model and the plastic yo-yo most closely associated with the brand in the postwar decades. Its full name — “Genuine Lumar Yo-Yo Championship 99” — is raised in molding on the body sides. A composite construction combines a plastic shell with a thin internal metal sheet reinforcement for durability.

Production ran continuously from the early 1950s into the early 1980s under Louis Marx ownership and then under Dunbee-Combex after the 1967 acquisition. Stamp lettering width varies across production runs and is used by collectors to date specimens: the larger, wider “LUMAR” text indicates earlier manufacture. Known colorways include black, orange, baby blue, pink, yellow, red, and green. A 1950s pin badge (“Spinner Award” button) was sold as a companion accessory.
