History / About
Introduced in Japan in 1979 for the Coca-Cola Moscow Olympics campaign, the Special Spin was Russell’s most technically advanced model. Its steel axle with a concave center kept the string centered in the gap during play — a significant engineering departure from the standard fixed wooden axle used on every other Russell model. Russell marketed it as spinning “two and a half times longer” than conventional yo-yos. The design was finalized in 1981 when it became available outside Japan, with a documented Australian Coca-Cola release that year.
