About

The Doble Ariel is a handmade wooden fixed-axle yo-yo with adjustable brass lapper discs. Archived Doble product information describes a 0.078-inch music-wire axle, a conventional twisted-cotton string, and an approximate weight of 57 grams that varies with the wood and finish. Turning and moving the halves adjusts the string gap and the pressure between string and lapper discs, allowing the player to tune sleep and return behavior. Smooth string-contact surfaces were intended to reduce string wear.

John J. McAvoy Jr. patented the design. The 1993 patent date does not establish the Ariel’s retail release date. Archived Doble copy and Ariel photographs via Doc Pop.
