The MAG 5-Star is one of two Series 1 models (alongside the Cyko) that launched Custom Products’ MAG line in 1998. The MAG series was conceived to bring an entirely different aesthetic to performance aluminum yo-yos: rather than smooth machined surfaces, each model featured intricate rotationally symmetrical cutout designs machined through the sides, making the yo-yo appear to have “no connection between the axle and the rim” when spinning — an optical illusion one museum contributor described as “exotic and beautiful.”
Series 1 models (5-Star and Cyko) used a tapered gap for response rather than the Performance Ring pads introduced in later series. Both shipped with a G-sized ball bearing, a plastic carrying case, a velvet bag, and two strings. Limited-edition black “Special” anodized matched sets of Series 1 pairs were also released at the end of each production run. Retail price was $50. The 5-Star’s side cutout design features five radially arranged holes.
