History / About
Bird In Hand is a store in Chico, California, owned by Bob Malowney, which houses the National Yo-Yo Museum. Per YoYo Wiki and the Yo-Yo Museum, it sold its own line of wooden yo-yos from 1988 to about 1995, handcrafted by Steve Smith of Chico in natural, stained, painted and lacquered finishes. From 1993 the store contracted Hummingbird Yo-Yo of New York, and from 1995 its successor BC/What’s Next, to make yo-yos for the National Yo-Yo Contest.
The Award line was made specifically as awards, produced in gold, silver and bronze, with the color of the yo-yo indicating the award level. The logo was the same on all three. The Museum exhibit is a metallic blue example labeled Bronze Award, dated 1992. YoYo Wiki describes the shape as imperial, three-piece wood, painted, fixed axle, 2.25 in diameter.
