The Acorn Mini began as a joke. In February 2026, YYE forum regular Slestak75 (Steve) teased a new fixed axle design he claimed would take the community “deeply by emotion” — then revealed the Acorn and Acorn Mini to be literal acorns that had fallen from the oak tree behind his house. The thread immediately took on a life of its own.
Andy (AudreySickburn) of Return Bottoms was the first to take the gag seriously. Within hours of the reveal, Andy had modeled the acorn shape in CAD and 3D-printed prototypes in wood-blend filament, complete with a glued-in stainless steel axle and MR85 pads. After testing and iterating on the geometry to address balance issues, Andy and Steve agreed to take the design to the machine shop. The production Acorn Mini was specified in solid copper — a material chosen for its density and heft in a small package — at 40.6mm diameter and 30.5mm width, running an MR85 bearing. Proceeds above production cost were designated for the Social Work fund of Salem VA Hospital.
Each Acorn Mini box is a 3D-printed tree stump. A pop-up squirrel, Throw-Yo Threads gummy Acorn counterweight, and a few stickers are pack-ins.
