The 2016 World Yo-Yo Contest took place from August 4 to 7 in Cleveland, Ohio, marking the competition’s major return to the United States. Sanctioned by the International Yo-Yo Federation (IYYF), the massive event gathered over 1,000 yo-yo players and fans from more than 20 countries at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. In the highly competitive 1A division, Shion Araya secured his first World Champion title. The year also featured absolute dominance from Japanese throwers across all main playstyles, sweeping the championship divisions with victories by Shu Takada (2A), Hajime Miura (3A), Rei Iwakura (4A), and Takeshi Matsuura (5A).
