The 2020 World Yo-Yo Contest was originally scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary. However, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the event was postponed and ultimately canceled entirely. The International Yo-Yo Federation (IYYF) and the local organizing team faced significant financial losses from non-refundable venue deposits and travel arrangements; the IYYF ultimately absorbed these costs to support the Hungarian organizers. Because the entire contest was canceled, no World Yo-Yo Champion titles were awarded for the year 2020.
The cancellation of the 2020 event marked an unprecedented pause in the modern competitive yo-yo circuit. To maintain the spirit of global competition during the ongoing lockdowns, the IYYF shifted to a digital format, creating the “Online World Yo-Yo Contest” (OWYYC) which took its place for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. The official, in-person World Yo-Yo Contest did not return until 2023 when it was held in Osaka, Japan.
