Two Yo-Yos, One String: The Rise of Hydr0A

Born from a late-2024 experiment by Australian maker Nic Conrick, Hydr0A transformed an obscure two-yo-yo concept into a teachable, evolving style built around fixed axles, responsive play, and controlled chaos.

At first glance, Hydr0A looks like a problem someone forgot to solve.

There are two yo-yos, one string, and no fixed point. Every throw sends one end of the system away while the other remains live in the player’s hand. Every catch changes which yo-yo is acting as the anchor. Loops reverse, mounts overlap, and the object that looked like a counterweight a moment ago suddenly becomes the active yo-yo.

Then the pattern reveals itself.

One yo-yo leaves as the other returns. Two arcs cross like circles in a diagram. A familiar trapeze becomes a moving target. Responsive regens, fixed-axle stalls, counterweight releases, and two-handed string geometry all begin to occupy the same space.

This is Hydr0A, the fixed-axle style founded by Adelaide-based artist, musician, and maker Nic Conrick. In less than two years, it has moved from a private joke to a named discipline with purpose-built sets, a growing trick vocabulary, a four-week community curriculum, and recognition from one of the world’s largest yo-yo retailers.

It is still small. It is also no longer hypothetical.

Before Hydr0A, There Was Hydra

The basic idea of attaching two yo-yos to opposite ends of a single string is much older than Hydr0A. The configuration was historically called Hydra, and forum records describe it as early as the late 1990s. One retrospective on the YoYoExpert forum says Hydra tricks appeared in the third issue of YoYo World Magazine in the winter of 1999. A surviving 2009 description is blunt: “Two yo-yos are attached at opposite ends of a single string.”

Hydra never disappeared completely, but it remained a fringe style. Players occasionally resurfaced the idea on forums, often comparing it to 3A or 5A and noting the difficulty of starting and controlling two yo-yos without a conventional string-hand anchor. Hubstacks and other assisted starts could make modern bearing yo-yos more practical, but the style never developed the broad instructional ladder that helped 1A through 5A grow.

As late as April 2024, a YoYoExpert discussion about playing “3A yoyo but 5A style” treated Hydra as an obscure answer to a theoretical question. One participant called it “somewhere inbetween 3A and 5A while also just totally being its own thing.” Another said the linked clip was the only example a quick search had produced.

That was the opening Conrick stepped into. He did not claim to have invented the two-yo-yos-on-one-string configuration. His innovation was to rebuild it around the assumptions and vocabulary of 0A: fixed axles, responsive returns, stalls, regens, and the tactile rhythm of old-school play.

The zero in Hydr0A makes that lineage visible.

The Joke That Worked

Conrick had already spent decades around yo-yos before Hydr0A emerged. A member of Team Throw-Yo and the maker behind CowClops, he was known for handmade wooden yo-yos, sculpted counterweights, experimental string, and a willingness to treat skill toys as a material rather than a finished category.

Hydr0A grew out of that same instinct.

In a March 2025 forum discussion, Conrick traced the beginning to his offhand practice in late 2024. “The Hydr0A started as a joke that wasn’t very funny and then actually worked,” he wrote. Elsewhere, he described it as an extension of counterweight 0A whose double mounts were beginning to move into 3A territory.

The first public traces appeared near the end of 2024. On December 29, Conrick posted that he was “really digging hydr0A” with a pair of square yo-yos. Roughly two weeks later, on January 15, 2025, he published a 97-second setup video titled This is Hydr0A style yoyo. Its description reduced the proposition to one line:

Two fixed axle yoyos with just one string.

That simplicity was important. Classic Hydra could look like a specialist’s stunt. Hydr0A could be assembled from two responsive yo-yos and a string. They did not even have to match. When a Fixed Axle February participant demonstrated the style with an unmatched pair, Conrick called it proof that identical yo-yos were unnecessary.

His early setup advice also gave the experiment repeatable parameters. For the first Hydr0A challenges, he recommended approximately 5A-length string: shorter than a typical 1A setup but longer than 2A string. He also identified one of the style’s core mechanical problems. Without intervention, consecutive loops naturally alternate direction. To keep them traveling the same way, the player manually flips the caught yo-yo 180 degrees, mimicking the rotation it would receive during a regen.

This was no longer merely two yo-yos tied together. It was the beginning of a technique.

What Makes Hydr0A Different

Hydr0A borrows from several established styles without behaving exactly like any of them.

From 0A, it takes fixed-axle response, stalls, regens, and the demand for deliberate string tension. From 5A, it takes the idea that the end of the string can move freely and become part of the trick. From 3A, it inherits intersecting planes, simultaneous mounts, and the problem of controlling two spinning bodies at once. Looping and juggling also enter the vocabulary as the player begins alternating throws and catches.

The key difference is that neither yo-yo is permanently assigned the role of throw, counterweight, or anchor. Those jobs can change several times within one sequence.

That makes even elementary tricks feel newly unstable. A trapeze requires the player to manage not only the landing yo-yo but also the yo-yo forming the far end of the string. A loop is also a handoff. A regen may redirect the entire system. A double mount can resemble 3A geometry, but both yo-yos remain connected by one continuous line.

Hydr0A is difficult, but its difficulty is legible. The player can isolate a breakaway, a catch, a stall, or a flip and practice it as a discrete action. That would become crucial when the style moved from Conrick’s hands into the community.

Fixed Axle February Changes Everything

The decisive moment arrived in February 2025, only weeks after Conrick’s setup video.

The YoYo Boomers Club included Hydr0A with CowClops as a dedicated series in its month-long Fixed Axle February event on the YoYoExpert forum. Hydr0A appeared beside established teachers and players including Ed Haponik, Jerrod, Dazzling Dave, and the event’s broader fixed-axle trick ladder. CowClops supplied a purpose-built Hydr0A pair as the series prize.

More importantly, Conrick supplied structure.

The series began with setup, Venn Diagram, and Staccato Loops. Week two added trapeze stalls and instant brother stalls. Week three introduced the Hydr0A Zipper. The final week expanded into mounts, including Twin Doughnuts, Twin Undermount, and an invitation for players to invent their own variation.

The names made the style memorable. The weekly schedule made it approachable. The prize gave participants a reason to try it, but the tutorials gave them a way to continue.

Forum posts show players working through the mechanics in real time. Henry, Michal Jánský, Collin, Vitalii, and others compared setups, posted attempts, and asked for clarification. Conrick answered with practical advice while keeping the rules loose. When Vitalii worried about variations or mistakes, Conrick replied that the style was only about six weeks old and that new variations were welcome.

By the end of the event, four users had submitted Hydr0A videos totaling 22 entries. That was a small fraction of the overall Fixed Axle February participation, but it represented something the earlier Hydra discussions lacked: multiple people learning a shared sequence from a named curriculum. Vitalii, posting as Spinstar, completed the series and won the CowClops Hydr0A set. A later Instagram unboxing thanked Conrick, the YoYo Boomers Club, and YoYoExpert, documenting the physical set leaving its maker and entering another player’s collection.

Hydr0A had crossed the line from demonstration to transmission.

A Style Needs More Than Tricks

New yo-yo styles rarely grow through technique alone. They need language, equipment, documentation, and a reason for players to identify with them.

Hydr0A accumulated all four quickly.

Conrick gave the style a recognizable trick vocabulary. CowClops produced matched wooden pairs and donated a set as a prize. Team Throw-Yo incorporated Hydr0A and CowClops artwork into merchandise in March 2025, giving the project a visual identity outside the tutorial videos. Forum participants created variations and demonstrated that the style worked with Duncan Butterflies, Imperials, ProYos, square yo-yos, and unmatched pairs.

The tutorials also continued after the event. In January 2026, Conrick published expanded lessons for One Hand Juggle and Venn Diagrams. The one-hand variation replaced the usual regen element with a hand switch, followed by a 180-degree flip and a deliberately soft throw. The updated Venn Diagram lesson described alternating breakaways in which one yo-yo is released before the other is caught.

On Instagram, Conrick pushed the style into non-dominant-hand juggling and continued testing it with different pairs. An August 2026 post described Hydr0A juggling with his non-dominant hand and tagged Joseph Stromme’s non-dominant-hand challenge. Another showed Hydr0A played with a pair of Spin Drifters.

The style was no longer confined to the trick list that introduced it.

From Adelaide to REWIND

The clearest sign of Hydr0A’s widening reach arrived on September 1, 2026.

Yo-Yo Store REWIND published tutorial number 990 in its long-running daily trick series: Hydr0A Loop & Warp Drive. The Instagram post and its YouTube counterpart used a pair of YoYoFactory Loop 720s and explicitly credited “Nicholas Conrick” as the trick’s inspiration.

The response also showed that the style had reached well beyond the original Fixed Axle February group. Within hours, the Instagram post had drawn hundreds of likes and multilingual comments. Doc Pop wrote that he had tried learning the style when Conrick first posted the tutorials, “but it’s so hard!” Other commenters immediately asked to see the idea expanded into double-hand play.

That credit matters. REWIND operates in Japan and the United States and has documented thousands of tricks for an international audience. Its channel had previously covered classic Hydra ideas as nostalgic, old-school techniques. Calling this tutorial Hydr0A, using responsive loopers, and crediting Conrick recognized the newer branch as something distinct.

The progression is striking. At the end of 2024, Conrick was experimenting with a pair of square yo-yos. Six weeks later, players on another continent were learning his trick series online. Less than two years after the first posts, an international retailer was teaching a Hydr0A trick under its own tutorial banner.

That is what the rise of a niche style looks like now. It does not require a sanctioned contest division or a mass-produced signature yo-yo. It requires a reproducible setup, a body of tricks, teachers, students, and enough documentation that the next player does not have to begin from zero.

Controlled Chaos

Hydr0A remains young, and its future is unwritten. It may stay rooted in fixed-axle gatherings and online trick circles. It may develop a deeper juggling vocabulary, split into responsive and unresponsive branches, or inspire purpose-built hardware. Its trick language will almost certainly change as more players discover motions its founder has not tried.

That openness is part of its appeal.

Conrick did not simply revive Hydra by replacing bearings with wooden axles. He found a different logic inside the same basic configuration. Responsive play made the catches meaningful. Fixed axles made stalls and regens central. Counterweight 0A supplied the conceptual starting point, while 3A, 5A, and looping offered directions for expansion.

The result feels both old and new: two yo-yos, one string, and a growing number of possibilities between them.

Hydr0A began as a joke that worked. Now it is a style other people can learn.
